Les Misérables star Eddie Redmayne believes he "appallingly" sang 'Empty Chairs at Empty Tables' in the 2012 movie.

Directed by Tom Hooper (The King's Speech), this adaptation of the classic musical placed the future Oscar winner in the role of Marius Pontmercy, opposite Anne Hathaway's Fantine, Russell Crowe's Javert and Hugh Jackman's Jean Valjean.

To achieve an unmatched level of authenticity, Hooper tasked his actors with performing each of their tracks live on set, which helped to replicate the raw emotions they'd feel on stage.

"I love the frailty," reflected Redmayne at this month's Toronto International Film Festival (via Entertainment Weekly).

"Technically, ['Empty Chairs at Empty Tables' is] appallingly sung, but it's got like a fragility that helps sell the song."

Openly discussing his approach, the Fantastic Beasts star name-dropped Robert De Niro and his process while working on 2006 spy flick The Good Shepherd together.

"De Niro has this process where he's filming, and you'd do a take, an emotional take, and then he would stop you and get you to go back and start again, and take the accumulation of that emotion and repress that and fire that back into the start of a scene, and that's what we did here on this piece eventually."

During the making of Les Misérables, Hooper was more than content after six takes, yet Redmayne was so inspired by De Niro that he pushed himself even further.

"I'm going to go until I can't go anymore. Because at least when you're not happy with what you end up seeing, you know that you went for it.

"We did that there. We did push it pretty far," he admitted.
