Idris Elba has admitted he finds the trailer for his new movie Beast somewhat misleading.

The Marvel star takes on the role of Dr Nate Daniels in the movie, a recently widowed man who takes his daughters on holiday in the South African savannah – though when a lion starts hunting them, the trip becomes a fight for survival.

While the trailer features plenty of terrifying action (including Elba punching a lion), the star admits that there's more to it than meets the eye.

"I think that the trailer — and I shouldn't say this — but the trailer is slightly misleading from what the film is because it was not just 'Idris punching a lion'," he exclusively told Digital Spy.

"What was attractive [about the film to me] is that this isn't like some, you know, ex military guy. This is a man whose actually going through a tough time with loss and grief and finds himself in this situation," Elba continued.

"It's kind of like a 'What would you do?' situation right, because your two daughters are being threatened by something you have no understanding of — this rogue lion.

"So I was attracted to putting all those ingredients into one pot and trying to make a film that is to your point, you know, escapism for an hour and getting there, throw your popcorn at the screen and just lose it.

Of course, Elba had to work closely with CGI to bring Beast to life, though has admitted he had one hilarious mishap over a stunt performer's methods.

"It was funny because how we got into it," the star recalled. "The guy that is playing the lion as a character in the grey [CGI] suit was a lovely guy — a stunt performer as well. And, you know, he liked to growl.

"I was like: 'Hey, man, you know, they're gonna put the sound in later.' He's like: 'I know, I just can't help doing it.' [Idris imitates his growling] And at one point I was like: 'No, seriously, it's making me laugh. I'm trying to be serious and [it's] scary and you're actually making me laugh.'"

Beast is out now in UK cinemas.
