Community fans have been begging for 'six seasons and a movie' to become a reality for years now. We had the sixth season a whopping seven years ago, but where's the movie?

Well, creator Dan Harmon – who is also the boss on Rick and Morty – has given a positive update on the status of the film, although he's offered a bit of caution to fans.

"I will now say it's a matter of 'when'. I have been so careful about [saying] that," Harmon told Newsweek.

"It would have been accurate three years ago to say 'it's a matter of when, not if'. The wheels have been in motion for that long.

"The fan that Instagrams every day about Community, how can you tell them, 'yes, it's definitely going to happen, but it may be between one and eight years from now'? Which is how the industry works, especially when you factor in pandemics and whatnot.

What to Read Next

"How about this for a concrete thing? There is an outline for it. There's a product put together and pitched out in the world. I guess that's how real it is. That's probably enough that'll make people mad when [there's nothing] a year from now. It still doesn't mean there's going to be a movie tomorrow. It means there is definitely going to be one."

So if it was the case of 'when, not if' three years ago, does that mean there's only a maximum of five years left to wait in terms of the how the industry works? Or did the eight-year maximum begin last year when Harmon confirmed that he was working on the script?

Who knows, but Joel McHale has said that interest has grown in the last year or so (possibly due to people binge-streaming it during the pandemic).

Community is available to stream in its entirety on Netflix in the UK.
