Why Thor: Love and Thunder was never going to feature Loki

Marvel's Thor: Love and Thunder was never going to feature Tom Hiddleston's Loki, its co-writer has confirmed – and now we know why the God of Mischief was absent.

Following the release of Taika Waititi's Ragnarok follow-up Love and Thunder earlier this summer, fans have been wondering why Thor's adoptive brother failed to return to Asgard along with the rest of the gang.

Now, co-writer Jennifer Kaytin Robinson has explained why, and it's actually fairly straightforward.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Jennifer admitted that Loki's involvement in the latest Thor sequel was "never on the table" as she understands it. Instead, Loki is simply "in Loki-land", in reference to the Disney+ TV series.

"He's doing his own thing," Robinson added. "[Loki and Thor] are on two separate journeys."

In the surprise scene, Russell Crowe's Zeus complains about having been disrespected by Thor, Jane, Valkyrie, and Korg. He then addresses Hercules directly, with the camera panning to Brett in full demigod attire.

"I saw that at the premiere with everybody else," Robinson admitted.

"In the same way that I guess Taika didn't know Thor was coming back, I did not know that Roy Kent was Hercules. I'm a huge Marvel fan, so I was delighted to have one moment in the movie where I was truly surprised."

Thor: Love and Thunder is now playing in both US and UK cinemas. The other three Thor movies are available to stream now on Disney+.
