Purple Hearts spoilers follow.

Netflix's new movie, the romance drama Purple Hearts starring Sofia Carson, has viewers reaching for the tissues over and over again.

The emotional movie is based off the 2017 book of the same name by Tess Wakefield and follows Carson as singer-songwriter Cassie, who struggles to get her career off the ground. Meanwhile, Marine Luke (Nicholas Galitzine) is facing his own troubles. The two agree to marry purely for military benefits but after a tragedy occurs, their fake marriage begins to evolve into a real one as the two grow closer and bond.

Purple Hearts was released on Netflix on July 29 and is currently the most watched Netflix movie worldwide, topping even the Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans thriller The Gray Man. And, judging by fans' emotional reactions, it's easy to see why.

One fan commented on the movie's effective use of common romance movie tropes, tweeting: "Purple Hearts served the fake dating trope, slow burn, the one bed trope, enemies to lovers, marriage of convenience, he fell first but she fell harder AND the long distance trope and you simply expect me to get over it?????"

Another fan called the movie a "quality romance", sharing: "Omggg.. you guys have to watch Purple Hearts it's such a heartwarming film. I felt like I watched a really quality romance after a long time."

The movie certainly doesn't shy away from the tropes of romance movies and embraces the cheesiness that often comes with dramas like these. Fans were grateful for that, including one who wrote: "Just watched this and I LOVE IT!! Cause honestly I just need that cheesy romance formula from hater to lover and the fake relationship at this point, for my crazy week. Watch it you guys."

In general, viewers were emotionally exhausted after watching the Netflix romance flick.

However, critics are somewhat less enthusiastic about the movie. It currently has a rating of 27% on Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 30 on Metacritic. Meanwhile, some viewers have singled out certain lines in the film as problematic while others have called the movie "military propaganda".

Carson was previously in the Disney channel's Descendants movies, while she is a singer in her own right, having releasing a studio album earlier this year. Galitzine starred in Camila Cabello's Cinderella, while the movie also features Chosen Jacob, John Harlan Kim and Kat Cunning.
