Marvel's recent announcements at San Diego Comic-Con have got fans excited – particularly for the upcoming pair of Avengers movies, Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, and Avengers: Secret Wars.

Those huge, tantalising projects will come in Phase 6 of the MCU, but as Phase 4 draws to a close, some fans wondered why there wasn't an Avengers movie in the first part of Marvel's Multiverse Saga. Now, MCU boss Kevin Feige has addressed this in an interview with MTV News.

"The truth is, when we were doing Phase 1, Phase 2, and Phase 3, there were less projects over more years. They were smaller projects and individual character stories, and it felt appropriate at that point, that after every two or three years that it took for a phase, we would do an Avengers film," Feige said.

"As [Phase] 4, 5, and 6 were coming together, there are more projects in less years – because of all the amazing stuff we're now allowed to do on Disney+, and getting characters from Fox, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool — that it felt like, certainly after Infinity War and Endgame, that we thought Avengers movies aren't cappers."

Feige continued: "So many of our movies now – Multiverse of Madness, what you're about to see in Quantumania, all our big team-up films introducing big parts of the mythology — and that Avengers films really should be the capper to a saga, which is what really all we wanted to lay the groundwork for today is say, 'We are currently in the midst of the Multiverse Saga, which will culminate in two Avengers films.'"

Phase 4 is the first phase in the MCU not to have an Avengers movie. Phase 1 culminated with The Avengers, while phase 2 featured Avengers: Age of Ultron. Phase 3, the conclusion of the Infinity Saga, boasted two huge Avengers movies in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

However, while the next Avengers movie won't land until 2025, the MCU continues to grow in scale and depth and the superhero rosters ever increases.

Movies like Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Spider-Man: No Way Home serve as crossover events in their own rights. That looks to continue into Phase 5 of the MCU – which, at this time, also doesn't have an Avengers movie on its slate.

The confirmed MCU Phase 5 movie lineup consists of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Marvels, Blade, Captain America: New World Order and Thunderbolts.

It will also feature several TV shows – Secret Invasion, Echo, a second season of Loki, Ironheart, Agatha: Coven of Chaos and Daredevil: Born Again.

Avengers: Endgame is out now on DVD, Blu-ray, 3D, 4K and digital download, and is available on Disney+.
