Dakota Fanning is set to reunite with her Man On Fire co-star Denzel Washington in The Equalizer 3.

Deadline has confirmed that Fanning will star opposite Washington in the third film in The Equalizer series, which is set for release in September 2023.

It's been nearly 20 years since the pair worked together on action thriller Man On Fire, where Washington played the bodyguard of the then-9-year-old Fanning.

The new film's plot and Fanning's role are currently being kept under wraps but Antoine Fuqua will be back in the director's chair.

The Equalizer is loosely based on a 1980s television series of the same name, with the first film being released back in 2014.

The franchise sees Washington as Robert McCall, a former US Marine who fights for justice.

Chloë Grace Moretz and David Harbour appeared in the first film alongside Washington, while the second saw Star Wars' Pedro Pascal join the cast.

Earlier this year, Washington confirmed a third Equalizer was on the way, while promoting Joel Coen's adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth.

"They have written the third Equalizer, so I'm scheduled to do that," he said. "So I gotta get in shape and start beating people up again. I get to beat people up again.

"The Tragedy of Macbeth and then going and beating some people up. Can't get any better, right?"

Meanwhile, the TV version of The Equalizer, which stars Queen Latifah in the lead role, has had a major shake-up ahead of its third season.

Both Andrew W Marlowe and Terri Edda Miller have been replaced as showrunners, with Deadline reporting last month that CBS has brought in Joseph C Wilson and Adam Glass to oversee future episodes.

The Equalizer 3 will premiere in cinemas on September 1, 2023.
