James Gunn confirms Guardians of the Galaxy 3 filming wrap

James Gunn has revealed that filming for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 has wrapped in a heartfelt Instagram post.

Gunn posted a picture of his clapper board on Sunday (May 8). It was presented to him by the crew after they shot the last scene including his younger brother Sean, who provides motion capture for Rocket.

"It was an easy shot of Rocket seated, 1st with @thejudgegunn, & then nothing there, & took everything in me not to break down sobbing on the spot," he wrote.

"The majority of the last ten years of my life have been spent working on & thinking about the Guardians. I still have a long road ahead of me with VFX & editing, but it was still momentous to me."

Gunn continued that he found it difficult to explain how much he loved the characters, saying that he views them as parts of himself and "parts of those I love". He added that writing and filming the movie was a way to express that love.

He said: "Shooting that last shot was a reminder of the warm impermanence of life & love, & how that impermanence makes it so precious, so valuable, & is a good reason to be grateful for what I have right now.

"Anyway. The camera crew also stuck their hand-made camera lens caps on the back of the slate for me, which is what the second photo is. Much love to you all."

Marvel confirmed that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3 will be released on May 5, 2023, after filming was confirmed to have started in November 2021.

After his firing from the movie in 2018 and subsequent rehiring a few months later, Gunn has hyped up the threequel, saying that it will be huge in terms of the worlds seen.

"I'm not sure the galaxy is big enough for all this magic. This. One. Is. Huge. I'm excited," he said.

Gunn also confirmed in May 2021 that the movie's soundtrack had been completed, months before filming started.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 1 and Vol 2 are available now. The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is coming to Disney+ later this year, and then Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 arrives on May 5, 2023.
