Lightyear stars the animated world's most beloved Space Ranger flying right to our screens in his origin story, to be released later this year.
Buzz Lightyear the human looks a little different to his toy counterpart introduced in the Toy Story franchise. As fans noticed in the trailer and poster, the character has hair this time around compared to human Buzz's always being hidden.
"That was part of the original pitch: you get to see Buzz's hair," director and co-writer Angus MacLane joked to Digital Spy.

MacLane continued: "The hair came together pretty quickly in that we wanted to be fairly functional and pushed up a little bit. We had very talented artists. That wasn't a challenging haircut."
While some fans were surprised to see Buzz's dark hair, it wasn't really a big deal to create for the film's animation team.

"In comparison to Alicia and Izzy who we spent months working on their hair and developing new technology. Buzz's hair? [shrugs]. I get it, like, 'Really he's not blonde? I always thought he was blonde'," produced Galyn Susman said.

Lightyear will connect to the Toy Story universe in its own peculiar way. Not exactly a movie about the toy we got to know and love in the film franchise, this standalone adventure centres on the original human Buzz the toy is based upon. Would Buzz the toy have seen the movie, then? Probably not according to the makers.
"It's in the DNA of the toy because the toy is based on it, but the question of has Buzz seen the movie, gosh, I don't know," MacLane said.
Galyn however was pretty sure Buzz couldn't have possibly watched the movie "because when he sees the commercial for the Buzz Lightyear toy in Sid's house, he's like, 'What? I'm a toy?' so he clearly can't be aware of any other existence other than himself."
Buzz is voiced by Marvel star Chris Evans, with the cast line-up also including Keke Palmer, Orange Is The New Black's Uzo Aduba and Dale Soules, Thor: Love and Thunder's Taika Waititi, James Brolin, Mary McDonald-Lewis, Efren Ramirez and Isiah Whitlock Jr.
Lightyear will be released in cinemas on June 17, 2022.
