Tom Hanks movie Greyhound has a sequel in development over at Apple TV+.

Released on the streaming service in the thick of the coronavirus pandemic, this maritime WWII epic put the two-time Oscar-winner front and centre as commander Ernest Krause of the USS Keeling, as his multi-national escort group defended a merchant ship from attacking German submarines.

The cast also included Stephen Graham (Peaky Blinders), Rob Morgan (Mudbound) and Elisabeth Shue (Back to the Future).

TheWrap first reported the sequel plans, but it's unclear whether or not Hanks will reprise his character.

Previously hailing Apple's acquisition of Greyhound, Hanks acknowledged the importance of streaming services amidst the industry-threatening pandemic.

"This is a magnificent gift that's come to us because of Apple. Because COVID-19 did something heartbreaking to us all. It closed down the theatres. We don't have the cinema. There isn't anybody that doesn't like going to see a good movie with 800 other people and coming out with something in common.

"Barring that, Apple Television has saved the day for us. We had a magnificent movie that was not going to be seen because of the realities," the actor said on The TODAY Show.

"We would've languished in a vault for a movie that, look, is 88 minutes of a thematic story that does speak to what we're all going through right now.

"We didn't know that at the time we made the film, we were just trying to make a lean, new spare version about procedures and behaviours about how difficult it was to stay alive in the North Atlantic in 1942."

Apple TV+ is currently enjoying the most popular spell of its three-year existence, thanks in part to a dark little delight known as Severance.
