The Handmaid's Tale star O-T Fagbenle has suggested he may appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe again in the future.

The actor popped up as former SHIELD agent Rick Mason in Black Widow, where he supported Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) while on the run.

However, this may not be the last we've seen of the character, according to the star, who teased a return in some form in a new interview.

"I mean, you know what, with Marvel, I'm never sure how much they can say about stuff, but I'll just say that it wasn't a one-and-done conversation," he told SlashFilm.

What form a potential return takes remains to be seen, though Fagbenle suggested that it may not tack as closely to his comics counterpart, who is known as 'The Agent'.

Asked whether he researched the source material, the star said: "I mean, to be honest, I did start to do all of that. I had conversations with Eric [Pearson], who wrote Black Widow, who's become a friend of mine, he's a genius and a beautiful person.

"In our conversations, in some ways I feel like this incarnation of Mason is an Eric creation… So although I did have a little peek at the original, I very soon just became focused on what Eric created for Black Widow."

Fagbenle previously spoke to Digital Spy about why he joined Black Widow ahead of the movie's release last year.

Revealing he "really liked" director Cate Shortland's movies beforehand, he added: "And of course, Scarlett. You know, it's weird sometimes, when you're really beautiful and you're a movie star, it's often hard just to keep track that actually this person is also incredibly talented.

"It's a bit like Brad Pitt – he's so handsome you forget that he's a really good actor – and Scarlett is such a good actress. And so getting to work with an actor of that level was one of the most intriguing things."

Black Widow is now streaming on Disney+.
