Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is almost here and, according to the first reactions, it's a blast.

The follow-up to the first Sonic movie, released in 2020, has been hailed as The Godfather Part II of the Sonic films.

If you haven't watched Francis Ford Coppola's mobster saga, suffice to say Sonic 2 might be even better than the first movie, meaning it should be well worth a cinema trip when it hits cinemas on April 8.

This second film sees the return of Ben Schwartz as the anthropomorphic, blue, speedy hedgehog from Sega's video game franchise.

In this new adventure, Sonic and his foxy friend Miles "Tails" Prower (Colleen O'Shaughnessey) are up against returning villain Dr Robotnik (Jim Carrey) and Sonic's enemy Knuckles the Echidna, introduced in this second movie and voiced by Idris Elba.

"#SonicMovie2 is EVERYTHING I wanted filled with moments I didn't know I was allowed to ask for. It makes the first #Sonic look like child's play. I witnessed children & adult collectively losing their minds. Overall, it made my heart smile, and I can't wait for the sequel," one tweet reads.

While one critic deemed it "more loyal to its game roots than ever," another reviewer praised the addition of Knuckles, which fans will get to see more of in a spin-off series, with Elba returning to lend his voice.

"#SonicTheHedgehog 2 is a sonic blast of nostalgic fun. Quite a bit more lore & extension of Sonic 1's story than I expected, which is fantastic. Knuckles and Tails make for beautiful additions to the cast. And the surprises this movie had ready to go blew me away."

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is set to be released in cinemas on April 8.
