Doctor Strange fans were set alight last week when a new trailer for sequel Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was released and a potential X-Men crossover was teased, leading some to speculate that Sir Patrick Stewart's Professor Charles Xavier would be returning.

During the brief scene in question, what some think is Stewart's voice can be heard saying off-screen "You should tell him the truth" as an imprisoned Dr Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) is brought in front of The Illuminati.

Now, Stewart has clarified his stance on the matter, denying that he is part of the project and that it is instead someone else using his voice.

"You know, people have been imitating my voice ever since I came on the stage 60 years ago. So, I can't be held responsible for that," Stewart confided in ComicBook.com.

Whether this is truth or more of the subterfuge Marvel is known for remains to be seen, but with the appearance of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man: No Way Home after their vehement denials, it certainly seems like fans will keep hope alive until it is proven otherwise.

However, Stewart did seem pretty resolute back in 2020 in saying he wouldn't reprise the role after Logan, noting the emotional farewell he and Hugh Jackman bid to their characters during a cinema viewing of the movie.

"Hugh took my hand, and we held hands for the last seven or eight minutes of the film because there was so many things we were upset about.

"We were moved by the story. We were moved by one another. We were moved by the movie. But we also both made the decision that we were saying goodbye to our characters as well. In that sense, it was not just the deaths of those two men in the franchise, but it was also goodbye to our part in them as well."

Stewart isn't the only Marvel star to address their potential appearance in the sequel as Deadpool's Ryan Reynolds has also recently denied being part of it, stating: "I could be an unreliable narrator, but I promise you I'm not in the movie."

The movie will however see the return of WandaVision's Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff, Benedict Wong as Wong, Chiwetel Ejiofor's Mordo and Rachel McAdams' Christine Palmer.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is due to be released on May 5, 2022.
