Marvel Studios threw the Doctor Strange fandom into chaos at the weekend, when it released a brooding, trippy trailer for Multiverse of Madness that seemed to confirm a cameo from Patrick Stewart's Charles Xavier. (X-Men in the MCU?! Ah!)

At the same time, it released a new poster that appeared to tease the involvement of Captain Carter, Peggy Carter's shield-wielding alter-ego from the Disney+ animated series What If...?.

And now, eagle-eyed theorists reckon they've spotted another unlikely character hidden in the artwork...

Taking to Twitter on February 14, several users shared the one-sheet, and argued that they could see Ryan Reynolds' Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, in one of the shards of glass surrounding Benedict Cumberbatch's Stephen Strange.

"Doctor Strange 2 is gonna be nuts y'all. Really looks like this is how they're bringing in the X-Men and Deadpool in the MCU. Sam Raimi and the visuals got me hyped," one social media user gushed, as another said: "DEADPOOL is in the poster for Doctor Strange 2, I think this movie might be just as special as Spider-Man."

Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld added fuel to the fire, too, by sharing an article that speculates whether the Merc with a Mouth would show up and adding a 'thinking face' emoji and a 'shush' emoji.

The comic book writer is no stranger to sparking rumours surrounding the subject. Just two weeks ago, he appeared on The Big Thing with Kristian Harloff on YouTube, where he seemed to suggest that some of the Marvel characters previously owned by Fox were in the movie.

"You want me to see it six times, you bring some of that [Fox-Marvel] stuff in… And actually, I know on some level, some of it is already there. I have just revoked every— every one of my [Marvel] passes just got revoked," he joked.

Lovers of Doctor Strange have been desperate for a follow-up since the titular surgeon-turned-Sorcerer Supreme was drafted into the MCU back in 2016.

In the second instalment, lead Benedict Cumberbatch will be joined on screen by fellow returning players Benedict Wong, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Rachel McAdams, who are set to reprise their respective roles as Wong, Baron Mordo and Christine Adams from the first film.

The Baby-Sitters Club actor Xochitl Gomez will also feature, while Avengers star Elizabeth Olsen will be back as Wanda Maximoff aka Scarlet Witch.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is due to be released on May 5, 2022.
