Uncharted has now arrived in US cinemas and like with the MCU, the surprises don't end when the credits start to roll.
Inspired by the video game series of the same name, the new movie brings Nathan Drake to the big screen with Tom Holland taking on the role. If the ending and credits scenes are anything to go by, this is just the start for Nate.
Uncharted tells its own origin story of how Nate met Victor 'Sully' Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) as they seek to recover a fortune lost by Ferdinand Magellan centuries before. Nate is unaware that the quest has a personal link to his brother Sam though who he hasn't spoken to for 15 years.
Nothing is ever straightforward for Nate though and Uncharted's ending and credit scenes set up a surprise for him in a potential sequel with a surprise comeback. But to delve into what it all means, we need to head into some major spoilers.
Uncharted ending explained
The key to finding the Magellan fortune is actually two keys. Chloe Frazer (Sophia Ali) has one of them already, so Nate and Sully reluctantly team up with her in Barcelona after they steal the other one from an auction.
By working together in the tunnels beneath Barcelona, Nate and Chloe eventually find the Roman storehouse where the treasure was supposedly stored. However, all they find is a map pointing to the real location of the treasure, which Chloe duly steals from Nate, because she's actually working for Moncada.
What to Read Next
Sully reveals to Nate that the real reason he sought him out is that he was working with Nate's brother Sam, who Nate hasn't seen since Sam ran away from an orphanage 15 years earlier.
Sam was shot by Moncada's mercenary Braddock (Tati Gabrielle) when they went for an earlier clue and Sully left him for dead. While they were working together, Sam told Sully that Nate would have the final clue that unlocked the treasure's location.
Nate and Sully sneak on board Moncada's plane to the Philippines, but Moncada doesn't make it there as he's killed on board by Braddock. Nate and Sully are separated as they escape from the plane, but Chloe helps Nate survive his fall and they decide to work together to find the treasure before Braddock does.
It turns out that the postcards Sam had sent Nate over the years before his death contained a hidden message in invisible ink. When the two keys are placed together on the map, they point to where the treasure is stored.
Knowing that Chloe would betray him, Nate fools her by writing down the wrong location which she duly steals from him while he sleeps. Nate heads to the real location and finds two pirate ships loaded with treasure – as well as Sully, who tracked him there.
Unfortunately, Braddock also saw Nate on his way to the treasure and a battle ensues after Braddock's team lift the two ships out of the cove via helicopter, one of which Sully commandeers.
Long story short, Sully gives up the treasure he looted to save Nate, while Braddock is killed when she falls from the ship which is then dropped on top of her in the ocean. Ouch.
Chloe sees Nate and Sully on the helicopter as they make their escape, finally realising that Nate got one over her this time. If a potential sequel takes inspiration from the games though, she'll be back.
And the sequel could also see another face from Nate's past come back, which brings us too...
Uncharted credit scene explained: Who is writing to Nate?
Earlier on in the movie, we see Nate attempting a heist with Sam when they're children, but they're caught by the police and taken back to their orphanage. To stop him going to jail, Sam runs away and Nate never sees him again.
Sully tells him that Sam was shot and presumably killed by Braddock as they tried to find a clue to Magellan's treasure, putting an end to any Drake family reunion – or so we thought.
Uncharted's first credit scene – really it's an extension of the ending as there's just the title before it – cuts to a jail cell where somebody is writing a postcard to Nate. It's none other than Sam who is absolutely not dead and he has a message for Nate.
While he's unsure whether Nate is still getting his postcards, he hopes that he is as he warns Nate to "watch your back". What's unclear is exactly what Sam is warning Nate about, given that he's likely been in jail since he was shot by Braddock.
It could just be a slightly late warning to Nate about Sully's double-crossing ways or the possibility that Moncada and Braddock might track Nate down. But maybe Sam knows something else about a future danger coming Nate's way.
The movie is mostly just a loose adaptation of the Uncharted series, but this final reveal does take inspiration from a similar twist in Uncharted 4: A Thief's End.
In that game, Nate was also reunited with Sam after assuming he was dead, before the Drake brothers teamed up again to find Avery's treasure. It's unlikely that a movie sequel would directly follow this plot as it'd be too similar to the first movie's plot, which was inspired by A Thief's End.
We can absolutely see Sam reuniting with Nate reuniting in a potential Uncharted 2 to either protect him from the danger he warned him about, or for the brothers to head off on another treasure hunt with Sully.
Director Ruben Fleischer all-but admitted to ScreenRant that Sam would be in a sequel, assuming the first movie is a big enough hit. "There's some pretty obvious candidates as to who might appear in an Uncharted sequel," he explained.
"I think fans of the games know exactly who I'm talking about, but I'm not gonna commit to anyone or anything at this moment, because I'd just be lucky to know that we're able to make a sequel. So we'll see, time will tell."
Uncharted second credit scene explained
The post-credits scene doesn't have a major revelation like Sam being alive, but it does finally show Sully with a moustache like his video game counterpart.
We pick up with Nate at an unspecified time after the events of the movie as he attempts to broker a deal with somebody called Gage (played by Pilou Asbæk). Gage works for somebody who desires Nate's ring, originally owned by Sir Francis Drake, but in return, Nate wants an old Nazi map that probably leads to treasure.
Gage double-crosses Nate and takes the ring anyway and keep the map, but Sully arrives just in time with his tache and his cat, Mr Whiskers, to save Nate.
What's interesting for Uncharted fans is that Gage's boss is called Roman which could well be a nod to Gabriel Roman, one of the villains of the first game that saw Nate and Sully find Sir Francis Drake's coffin that contains the map to El Dorado.
Nate takes the map and also manages to swipe the ring back too. After they leave the bar though, they are stopped by somebody who we don't see, but it doesn't seem like they're happy to see them.
Could that be Sam who has tracked them down? We'll have to wait until a potential sequel to find out.
What we really need to know is whether Sully's tache is here to stay? "As far as future films, I would think that he would keep it, but ultimately, I guess that'd be Mark Wahlberg's decision," Fleischer told IGN.
"But I would hope that Victor Sullivan, from this point forward, has a moustache."
