The Matrix Resurrections spoilers follow.

Ahead of the release of The Matrix Resurrections, the biggest mystery of them all was how on earth Neo (Keanu Reeves) and Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) were back.

Both Neo and Trinity died during The Matrix Revolutions and we assumed that was the end of that. They both died in the real world, so there didn't seem to be any loophole that would bring them back.

Death was a mere inconvenience, however, and the duo are back in the new movie. Pre-release theories included Resurrections taking place in an earlier Matrix iteration, meaning they weren't our Neo and Trinity.

So what actually happened then? To explain just how Neo and Trinity are back alive though, we have to go into major spoilers, so look away now if you haven't seen The Matrix Resurrections yet.

First thing's first, they absolutely are the same Neo and Trinity that we fell in love with during the original trilogy.

When we meet them again, Neo is back to being games developer Thomas Anderson, creator of the celebrated Matrix games, and Trinity is Tiffany, a married mother of three. They are, of course, back in a new iteration of the Matrix and it's revealed that, in the real world, it's been 60 years since the end of Revolutions.

Neo is the first to wake up in the real world and when he's in his pod, he spots there's only one pod opposite him, containing Trinity's body. The pods are separate from the farm where the machines are harvesting human energy as per usual, but it's not immediately clear why.

It turns out that it's all the doing of The Analyst (Neil Patrick Harris) who we first meet in the movie as Thomas's therapist. He's doing everything he can to make Thomas believe that the Matrix is just a game, including prescribing blue pills for Thomas to take (a red/blue flag if ever we saw one).

The Analyst is a program who was there when Neo sacrificed himself to create a peace between humans and machines. This led to a civil war among the machines because as more humans unplugged themselves, energy became scarce and it was this fighting that led to The Analyst's rise in power.

Sensing the power in Neo and Trinity's connection, he persuaded his machine bosses to let him take their bodies. The Analyst then resurrected them using resurrection pods created by Sati's parents and plugged Neo and Trinity back into the Matrix, using them as a source code to build a new iteration.

The Analyst knew that he could use Neo and Trinity's bond to solve the energy crisis, but it wasn't an instant fix. Any time he created a Matrix where they found each other, their powerful bond broke the Matrix and if they were too far apart, it didn't create the energy that was needed.

So the decision was made to keep them "close, but not too close", which is why Neo and Trinity do cross paths in the current Matrix version, but they don't know each other.

The Analyst is essentially a combination of The Architect and the Oracle as he knows the value of human connection. By using desire and fear to control those within the Matrix (such as the fear of losing someone), he realised that the "worse we treat you, the more energy" we get.

Of course, his plan all starts to go wrong the minute Neo breaks free of the Matrix and sets his mind to free Trinity too.

By the end of the movie, both of them are free and even though the Matrix is still going, their connection to both each other and the Matrix itself gives them the power to remake it. – and there's nothing The Analyst can really do to stop them.

There's also an emotional reason behind Neo and Trinity's resurrection in the new movie as Lana Wachowski previously revealed that it was connected to the death of her parents.

"I couldn't have my mum and dad, I couldn't talk to my mom, yet suddenly I had Neo and Trinity, arguably the two most important characters in my life. It was immediately comforting to have these two characters again," she reflected at the Berlin International Literature Festival.

"And it's super simple, you can look at it and say, 'Ah yeah, these two people die, [so] bring these two people back to life, and oh doesn't that feel good?' And yeah, it did. This is what art does, this is what stories do. They comfort us, and they're important.

"I was very non-judgmental for myself. But it was so comforting that they were back in my life."

The Matrix Resurrections is out now in cinemas and is also available to watch on HBO Max in the US.
