The cast for Oppenheimer has gotten even more impressive, with Black Widow's Florence Pugh and No Time to Die's Rami Malek both joining.

The World War II-era Christopher Nolan film has already signed on Robert Downey Jr, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, as well as Peaky Blinders' Cillian Murphy as the titular 'father of the atomic bomb', J Robert Oppenheimer.

Pugh is set to take on the role of Jean Tatlock, who was a member of the Communist Party of the United States and had an affair with Oppenheimer, while Malek will reportedly play another scientist, according to Deadline.

The film has also added Obi-Wan Kenobi's Benny Safdie in the role of Hungarian scientist Edward Teller, who is known as the father of the hydrogen bomb and was involved in the Manhattan Project, which developed the first nuclear weapons.

Oppenheimer is based on Kai Bird and Martin J Sherwin biography American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J Robert Oppenheimer, and has been described as a "pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it".

Nolan, who is known for the likes of The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception and Tenet, is set to direct and write the biopic, and will also produce alongside Emma Thomas and Charles Roven.

The movie will also mark a bit of a change-up for the director, moving away from his long-standing partnership with Warner Bros after 18 years to work with Universal Pictures.

Pugh most recently starred as Yelena Belova in Black Widow and reprises the role in Hawkeye, while Malek appeared as Bond villain Safin in No Time to Die.

Oppenheimer is set to be released in 2023.
