A first look at Henry Golding and Dakota Johnson in the new Netflix romance Persuasion has been unveiled.

The Jane Austen adaptation, which drops next year, sees the Crazy Rich Asians and Fifty Shades of Grey stars take on the roles of Mr Elliot and Anne Elliot, respectively.

A group of new photos have now been released, depicting the pair in period costumes, alongside fellow star Cosmo Jarvis (Lady Macbeth), who plays Captain Frederick Wentworth.

The new version is being directed by theatre's Carrie Cracknell (Macbeth), with a screenplay by Ron Bass (Rain Man) and Alice Victoria Winslow.

"Living with her snobby family on the brink of bankruptcy, Anne Elliot is an unconforming woman with modern sensibilities," the official synopsis reads.

Persuasion's story will take "a modern, witty approach" while at the same time "remaining true to the novel".

Meanwhile, earlier this year Golding welcomed his first baby with wife Liv Lo, sharing an adorable black-and-white picture of the entire family together.

Persuasion will stream on Netflix in 2022.
