Promising Young Woman alternate ending shared by Emerald Fennell

A Promising Young Woman alternate ending has been revealed by director Emerald Fennell.

Now available to watch in the UK via Sky Cinema and NOW, the revenge thriller stars Carey Mulligan as medical school dropout Cassie who in-between exposing secretly predatory men, sets out on a vigilante quest for revenge following the death of her best friend Nina.

The movie's controversial ending (SPOILER!) sees Cassie suffocated and killed by Nina's rapist Al (Chris Lowell) at his bachelor party, after an attempt at revenge goes horribly wrong.

Her remains are then disposed of by Al and his friend Joe (Max Greenfield) in an attempt to cover up the crime.

A further twist occurs when during his wedding reception, Al and Joe are arrested for Cassie's murder, with prescheduled texts sent to her ex-boyfriend Ryan (Bo Burnham) revealing that Cassie had made a contingency plan in the event she didn't survive the bachelor party showdown, with the help of Al's former lawyer (Alfred Molina).

The rug pull of an ending saw Promising Young Woman take home two BAFTAs over the weekend, with the film also in contention for five Oscars later this month.

Director Emerald Fennell has since revealed an alternate ending to the film would have seen Cassie survive, with Al and Joe succumbing to a fiery death at her hands.

She told Vulture: "Another version of the ending is: [Cassie] burns the house down. But what happens then? The cops, jail forever? Was that worth it?

"I think that's the thing about this, and the thing about revenge in general and why it's such an interesting thing for me. Because there's no happy ending in any revenge."

Explaining her decision not to end Promising Young Woman with Cassie being alive, Emerald added: "I just didn't understand how that would happen without it being, as I said before, incredibly depressing and unfulfilling in a different way.

"Because for her too, as much as us, what happens after the catharsis? What happens after you've done that stuff? Your life's still ruined."
