Black Widow's death in Avengers: Endgame was her first "active choice" as a character, says Scarlett Johansson.
The highly-skilled assassin met her end when she sacrificed herself on the planet Vormir so that Hawkeye could retrieve the Soul Stone.
Having been brought up to the follow orders, this was perhaps the one and only moment in which she got to make a major choice in her 10-year journey. At least that's how Johansson sees it.
"I love Natasha," she told Total Film. "She's had an incredible 10-year journey, and I felt that she was finally able to make an active choice.
"It seemed very in-character, that ultimate sacrifice that she makes. She's made peace with that, and, in some ways, has known that's her destiny all along, in a weird poetic way."
She added: "When you look back on the films, that's in there. All the films have led her to that choice – or to be able to make that choice; or for it to be a choice."

While some fans feel like there's a lack of closure over Natasha's death, partly because she didn't get a funeral service like Tony Stark, Johansson has promised that the upcoming Black Widow spin-off will offer a satisfying "resolution".
The movie was meant to be released back in May, but was delayed by the coronavirus pandemic. While there have been rumours that it will head to Disney+ first like Mulan, Disney has confirmed that it will arrive in cinemas this November.
Black Widow has a November 6, 2020 release date in the UK and the US.
