Matilda is heading back to the big screen, but not how you remember her from the 1996 adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic.
Earlier this year, it was reported that Netflix and Sony were working together on a movie adaptation of Tim Minchin and Dennis Kelly's hugely successful Matilda the Musical, which has been playing in London's West End since 2011.
The movie version, to be produced by Working Title, will be directed by the musical's original director Matthew Warchus, with Kelly writing the screenplay.
But what else do we know about Matilda the Musical's move to the big screen?
Matilda release date: When can we expect Matilda to be released?
There's no confirmed release date for the movie yet, but we do know that it will be receiving a cinema release in the UK through Sony, before streaming on Netflix worldwide.
It's unclear if it will also come to Netflix in the UK at the same time, or if UK viewers will have to wait. Equally, it's not been confirmed whether the worldwide Netflix release will come at the same time as the UK theatrical one.
What to Read Next
According to a casting call earlier this year, the movie was set to film between August and December 2020. Due to the current worldwide situation though, Deadline reports that a filming start date has yet to be set.
Even if filming does take place later this year, it's unlikely the movie will be released until late 2021 at the earliest.
Matilda cast: Who's in the Matilda cast?
The movie has already found its Miss Trunchbull in the form of Ralph Fiennes, according to reports, but it has yet to be officially confirmed.
While the role of the terrifying headmistress was played by Pam Ferris in the 1996 movie, the role has been played by a man throughout the musical's run, including by Doctor Foster's Bertie Carvel in its original run.
The Daily Mail also reports that Killing Eve star Jodie Comer is in the running to play Miss Honey, but Emma Stone was also linked to the role in early 2020.
At this stage, we don't know for sure who will play the gentle schoolteacher.
It's equally unclear who will play the other roles such as the key characters of Matilda, Bruce Bogtrotter and Mr and Mrs Wormwood, so watch this space for casting announcements in the months to come.
Matilda trailer: When will a Matilda trailer arrive?
It's too early for a trailer for the movie as it hasn't even started filming yet, but you can get a taste for what to expect by watching the musical's trailer in the meantime.
