A sequel to Knives Out is officially happening.

The movie, written and directed by Star Wars: The Last Jedi's Rian Johnson, has been a critical and commercial smash – and is nominated for Best Original Screenplay at this weekend's Oscars.

Now, Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer has confirmed that a follow-up is in the works and that production is set to start on it imminently (via Deadline).

Given how well the original has performed – it's on the verge of making $300 million at the worldwide box office on a $40 million budget – and Johnson's regular hints at a sequel, it would have been a surprise if there wasn't a Knives Out 2 at some point.

Starring Daniel Craig, the whodunnit is a modern take on an Agatha Christie-style murder mystery and follows Craig's private investigator Benoit Blanc as he investigates the death of a family patriarch.

Chris Evans, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Ana de Armas, Christopher Plummer, Toni Collette and Katherine Langford also lead the star-studded cast.

Alongside its Oscar nomination, the film was up for three Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and Best Original Screenplay at the BAFTAs.

Knives Out is out in cinemas now, while it's also available to pre-order on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K. The 92nd Academy Awards take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles this Sunday, February 9.
