Brie Larson's Captain Marvel is officially getting a sequel – and a huge timeshift to the present day.

The team behind last year's original – co-writers and directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck – won't be back for the follow-up, but WandaVision writer Megan McDonnell is in final talks to work on its script, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Marvel is also apparently looking to hire a female director for the sequel, which will change the 1990s setting of the first movie to today.

Captain Marvel 2 is reportedly being planned for release in 2022.

The first movie was a huge hit and grossed over $1.1 billion worldwide, making it the first female-led superhero film to pass the billion-dollar mark.

It starred Larson as Carol Danvers, who becomes Captain Marvel after Earth is caught in the centre of a galactic war between two alien races, the Kree and shape-shifting Skrulls.

The actress later took on the role again in Avengers: Endgame.

Marvel has been pretty quiet on the Captain Marvel sequel, and when studio boss Kevin Feige announced the slate of Phase 4 movies last year, it was nowhere to be seen.

But interestingly, writer McDonnell's new Disney+ series WandaVision will feature a grown-up Monica Rambeau (who was an iteration of Captain Marvel in comics lore), so the show, arriving in 2021, could well set up the sequel.

Captain Marvel is out now on DVD, Blu-ray and digital download.
