If you're truly a follower of Pokémon's "gotta catch 'em all!" maxim, then you've probably already caught Pokémon: Detective Pikachu at the cinema.
Which means, unless you had an unfortunately-timed toilet break, you caught the shock ending, too.

As a quick recap, the movie follows Tim (Justice Smith) and Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds) as they work together to figure out how Tim's estranged father Harry Goodman died.
Despite originally pursuing Mewtwo as the bad guy, we soon discover that Ryme City founder Howard (Bill Nighy) is in fact the villain, while Mewtwo instead did something heroic – and wildly unexpected.

Because it's here that we find out that Harry actually isn't dead after all, as Mewtwo saved Harry's life by putting his soul into a new body – Pikachu's body, meaning that Tim was bonding with his dad (as Pikachu) through his entire quest all along.
Yeah. Emotional, right?
The film's star Ryan Reynolds and director Rob Letterman spoke to USA Today about the shock ending, with Reynolds explaining that he loved that the movie throws that twist at you.
"You have to sit and sort of go, 'Wait, hold on. I've got to break this down in my head. How does this work?'" he said. "I love that that happens. I love that the unexpected is possible in a movie like this."
As for Letterman, he admitted that this twist was the reason he wanted to make the film in the first place, citing Field of Dreams as a major inspiration.
"The father he's been working for has been with him all along was my pitch line. It's a script about Tim finding his dad," he explained.
"Field of Dreams, the ending, I shed man tears to this day. The whole thing is designed to hit that ending from the moment it started."
Pokemon: Detective Pikachu, then, has fart jokes, an incendiary duck (Psyduck) and a ludicrous premise – but it probably made you shed a tear too.
Pokémon: Detective Pikachu is out in cinemas now.
