After waiting a long time for a new Hellboy movie, a new film will arrive this week after an 11-year gap.

But rather than a sequel to Guillermo del Toro's second movie, this is a reboot. The film's new star, Stranger Things' David Harbour, speaks to Digital Spy about facing fans' expectations and delivering something new.

"There was a trepidation going in," he says when asked about expectations around the abandoned sequel.

What to Read Next

"That movie [Hellboy 3] wasn't going to be made, and so, that's a disappointment, but I felt like, at the time, when they pitched me this... first of all, I felt that Hellboy deserves a life in the comic book mythos that's out there. I love that voice of a dark, conflicted, half-demon, monster superhero. It's kind of great.

"But they also pitched me this idea that it was just going to be very, very different than those movies, because those movies stand alone as iconic, wonderful fantasy movies. We didn't want to do anything to repeat what they'd done or be the second string that comes in and tries to do that.

"So we wanted to go more horror with it, more gore, darker, and using the comic source material more directly. That allayed my trepidation and I just got excited. I got excited to do this new thing."

The movie sees Hellboy going up against an immortal witch (Milla Jovovich) who threatens to destroy the Earth. Harbour stars alongside some familiar faces including Ian McShane, Sasha Lane, Daniel Dae Kim... and Laila 'Big Mo' Morse.

Hellboy will be released on April 11 in the UK and on April 12 in the US.
