The picture was taken by amateur photographer Martin Le-May at Hornchurch Country Park in East London on Monday afternoon, with Le-May recounting to BBC News: "I heard a distressed squawking noise and feared the worst.
"I soon realised it was a woodpecker with some kind of small mammal on its back."
The small weasel was in fact trying to consume the woodpecker rather than hitching a free ride, but Le-May was quick to reassure the nation that both escaped unharmed.
"I think we may have distracted the weasel as when the woodpecker landed it managed to escape and the weasel ran into the grass," he added.
