It was only really a matter of time before this took off (excuse the pun), but finally drone racing has become a reality.

Based in the French Alps, a club called Airgony has started staging drone races through forests. The video below (via Pocket-lint) shows Star Wars-esque, first-person camera footage of drones racing at high speed.

The pilots use a combination of Oculus Rift-like glasses - so they can get a first-person viewpoint of their drone - and display relays. Competition looks fierce, with multiple accidents and some French-language trash-talking going on mid-race.

The drones approach speeds of up to 40mph while racing, which is more than enough to do some serious damage to what we expect are hugely expensive pieces of equipment.

One of the main reasons for the video's existence is to try and show how drones have uses beyond aerial photography.

Devices such as the Parrot AR drone are approaching a price point that is genuinely affordable.
