On the verge of the vote for Scottish independence, Groundskeeper Willie of The Simpsons has aired his views on the issue through the show's official YouTube channel.

The Dan Castellaneta voiced character - complete with the 'AYE OR DIE' birthmark - is unsurprisingly in favour of independence and passionate towards the cause ahead of the referendum on September 18.

This is not the first time that the Fox show has ventured into a political debate. Who can forget when Mr Burns endorsed Mitt Romney for President?

Or that time the tyrannical billionaire comically explained the fiscal cliff?

Other social issues such as gun rights, taxes and immigration have been at the centre of The Simpsons during its 26-year run too.

The Simpsons begins its 26th season, which includes a crossover episode with Family Guy, on 28 September in the US and at an unconfirmed later date in other countries.
