A new species of tarantula, described as being the size of a human face, has been discovered in northern Sri Lanka.

The spider, boasting legs which span 8 inches (20cm), has been named Poecilotheria rajaei, reports Wired.

Ranil Nanayakkara, who co-founded Sri Lanka's Biodiversity Education and Research organisation, said: "They are quite rare.

"They prefer well-established old trees, but due to deforestation the number has dwindled and due to lack of suitable habitat they enter old buildings."

In addition, the creature has distinct daffodil-yellow markings on the first and fourth legs.
