Thousands of swimmers have stripped off for a sub-zero North Sea dip.

The traditional Boxing Day charity swim saw thousands attend the 38th annual event in Seaburn, Sunderland.

Dressed in fancy dress costumes ranging from the Queen to the Spice Girls, the attendees raised money for their chosen charities.

"Seaburn beach did the job nicely for me!" commented one swimmer on Twitter. "Frozen now and I was only watching the dip."

"Some amazing people doing the Boxing Day dip at Seaburn raising lots of money for charity," tweeted another.

The event originated in 1974 and is one of the oldest such traditions in the country.
