A hindi adaptation of William Shakespeare's Hamlet, the film bagged five National Film Awards.
The awards included Best Male Playback Singer for Sukhwinder Singh's 'Bismil', Best Dialogues and Music Direction, Best Choreography and Best Costume Designer.
The director told IANS: "We have got more than what we expected. We have got five awards and I am overwhelmed."
Bhardwaj, who is already the recipient of four National Awards, added: "While making this film, I went with my conviction and I am happy that it has been appreciated."
He said however, that he was disappointed that Shahid Kapoor was not acknowledged for his path-breaking performance in the film.

"I am a bit disappointed for Shahid. His performance was really good in the film. I feel sad for Shahid," said Bhardwaj.
Kapoor himself was happy to acknowledge the achievement of the film and celebrate its latest success.
Writing on Twitter he said: "And Haider wins 5 at the national awards . So so so happy . Every one of them so well deserved . Proud . Big grin ."
The film received the People's Choice Award in the Mondo Genere (world genre) category at the Rome Film Festival - the first time that a Hindi film has won the top prize at the world-renowned festival.
