American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez has insisted that she didn't expect to cry while informing Chris Medina that he was being axed from the competition.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Lopez said that she found it very difficult to tell Medina that he'd been eliminated because she had been touched by the story of Medina's relationship with his girlfriend Juliana, who was seriously injured in a car accident.

"It was just really how I felt at the moment," she admitted. "I know that I'm a passionate person and I know I'm an emotional person. I just didn't expect it to hit me in that way."

The star added: "The producers were really great because I actually cried a lot more than they showed on TV."

Earlier this week, Lopez was announced as the new face of jewelry brand Tous.

Her seventh studio album Love?, which features the single 'On The Floor', is scheduled to be released later this year.

American Idol airs on Wednesdays and Thursdays on Fox.
