Mad Men star Kevin Rahm has defended his character Ted Chaough, even after his treatment of Peggy (Elisabeth Moss) in the season finale.

The AMC show's sixth season has seen the married Ted begin an affair with Peggy, but in the season finale he broke off the relationship to make a new start with his wife.

Rahm discussed his character's shocking behavior to Vulture, and expressed his opinion that Ted is a good man deep down.

"I still love Ted. I think he's doing the best he can," the actor said. "He's doing what he thinks is right."

He added of fan reaction to Ted's decision to split from Peggy: "I was interested to see how they would react more than anything. We keep learning more and more about him as we go.

"What I loved about what they did in the finale is [that they showed] that he's human. He's been kind of this super boss for a while, and I like that he's human."

Rahm also discussed Ted's complex relationship with co-worker Don Draper (Jon Hamm), who shocked Peggy earlier in the season by insisting that Ted is not as virtuous as she hoped.

"I would have disagreed with it when [Don] said it," the star explained. "I mean, it depends on how you define virtuous.

"Ted made a mistake, obviously. But it depends. We don't have a lot of information about his marriage."

Mad Men airs on AMC in the US and Sky Atlantic in the UK.
