Nothing lasts forever — not even a lusty tryst. It's sad but understandable then that Showtime's Golden Globe-winning drama The Affair is reaching its conclusion.

The series has just premiered its fourth season stateside, and now the premium channel is confirming that it will wrap up with a fifth and final run airing next year.

Showtime president Gary Levine said on Thursday (July 26): "We love the intimacy, the nuance and the emotional honesty of The Affair's subjective examination of both infidelity and fidelity.

"[Producer] Sarah Treem has always envisioned this as a five-season series, and we will be fascinated to see where she takes her talented cast and all of us next year in its climactic season."

Series star Ruth Wilson has been pulling double duty this year working on The Affair as well as reprising her role as serial killer Alice Morgan in the fifth series of Luther across the pond.

Wilson also recently made headlines for suggesting that although she won a Best Actress Golden Globe for her performance in The Affair, she had not received equal pay to her male counterpart Dominic West.

West later said he wasn't sure if he was indeed paid more than Wilson, but agreed with her point that they should be paid an equal amount for future seasons.

"There is no reason why we should not be paid the same," he said. "It's happened always in the theatre that I've done. In the murky world of Hollywood television, I suppose I didn't appreciate I had that power.

"Unlike our friends in America, I'm rather British in that we never talk about money… So maybe I was wilfully turning a blind eye to it, but it's not something I ever gave any thought to."

The Affair airs its season four finale on Showtime in the US on Sunday, August 19 at 9pm ET. Sky Atlantic airs the show in the UK.
