Selena Gomez and Netflix are jumping into the burgeoning Young Adult genre - albeit with a series rather than a film.

The streaming giant has commissioned a continuing drama based on Jay Asher's novel Thirteen Reasons Why, a New York Times bestseller.

Netflix's re-titled 13 Reasons explores the tragic suicide of a lonely high school student named Hannah Baker (Gomez).

It looks into Hannah's past through tapes she sent to classmates explaining how they contributed to her misery.

Brian Yorkey - a Pulitzer Prize winner for Next to Normal - has adapted the series for Netflix.

Gomez is no stranger to television, having starred for four seasons as the wise-cracking Alex Russo in Disney's much lighter Wizards of Waverly Place.
