Selfie sticks are no longer welcome at Disney theme parks after the company issued a blanket ban on the contraptions.

The smartphone accessories were previously permitted so long as visitors refrained from taking them on rides, but it looks like too many people were taking the Mickey and ignoring the warning signs.

The new policy will be ushered in at Disney World and California's Disneyland next week, before coming to Disney resorts in Hong Kong and Paris on July 1.

Disney employees will check visitors' bags for selfie sticks on their way into its theme parks, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Those found with them in their possession will have the option to leave them at the gate and collect them afterwards.

Several organisations have fought back against the selfie epidemic in the UK, with Premier League football clubs, art galleries, live music events and the Wimbledon tennis tournament among those issuing bans.
