Coronation Street has been receiving praise for its male rape storyline featuring David Platt (Jack P Shepherd). Unfortunately, not everybody has been on board.

One such critic is Fern Britton, who wasn't afraid to say what she thought on social media as the ITV soap aired scenes that showed David being drugged and assaulted on Friday (March 16).

"Is it looking for a post-watershed slot?" she tweeted. "Not witnessing the graphic horror/degradation/shame/pain of sexual abuse is worse than seeing it. Unsuitable for pre-watershed."

After using the hashtag '#SaveOurCorrie', Fern followed up with claims that Corrie has been 'too dark' as of late and does not reflect the show that she personally would like.

She did, however, praise the writing and acting performances.

"Now it's brain tumour, testicular cancer, kidney transplant, MS, and bipolar all in one dollop," she wrote. "Plus paedophile grooming, and now male sexual abuse. Not to mention heroin-addicted vicar, serial killer and psycho child.

Corrie boss Kate Oates recently explained how dealing with important issues is what the show has always done and always should do.

"Ultimately, the show has always dealt with issues that are noteworthy and promote discussion and that's kind of the point," she said. "The point is that we raise issues and people talk about them and hopefully we can change opinions and make people think differently."

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV.
