But then along came Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the play that follows Harry in his adult years as a stressed out Ministry of Magic employee and father of three.

So could this mean JK Rowling will carry on continuing the story even further? Well, don't count on it.

"He (Harry) goes on a very big journey during these two plays and then, yeah, I think we're done," she said at the play's official opening gala on Saturday (July 30).

"This is the next generation, you know. So, I'm thrilled to see it realised so beautifully but, no, Harry is done now."

The author also said that she chose to continue the story in play form rather than writing another novel because it was the best method for the next instalment.

"[It] chimed perfectly with the material I had about the next generation and I could see it would work perfectly.

"So, I never wanted to write another novel, but this will give the fans something special."

The play, which is showing at the Palace Theatre, has already sold out, but due to the high critical praise and extreme demand, the show is releasing an extra 250,000 tickets booking up until December 10, 2017, which go on sale next Thursday (August 4) at 11am BST.

The published script of both parts of the the play was also released this weekend, with several editions of the book due to be published.

Audience members have been encouraged not to spoil the plot with the hashtag #KeepTheSecrets.
