Director Taika Waititi has a habit of showing up in his own films, so it doesn't come as a huge surprise that he's revealed a heretofore secret cameo for himself in Thor: Ragnarok.

He will appear as the rock-like alien Korg in the movie.

Korg is a Kronan (he looks a bit like the Thing but with a longer head) who featured in the 'Planet Hulk' storyline, which has partly inspired the events of Thor's third solo outing.

"Obviously, being made of rocks, we wanted somebody like The Rock to play him, but there wasn't enough chicken or salmon in Australia to sustain he and Chris [Hemsworth]," Waititi joked during a Marvel press event (via Entertainment Weekly).

"I never thought I'd be playing the most lovable character in the film."

Korg was one of the enslaved gladiators who fought alongside Hulk and became a member of the angry green giant's Warbound team.

"We wanted to change the idea of what a hulking guy made of rocks could be," Waititi continued. "He's huge and heavy, but with a light soul. We wanted to make him funny and a relatable entry point into this world. And Thor needs friends."

Another Kronan appeared in the early part of Thor: The Dark World. He was reduced to rubble by the god of thunder, so presumably he wasn't Korg as we had originally assumed.

Ragnarok centres around the invasion of Asgard by the death goddess Hela (Cate Blanchett). Thor's hammer is destroyed and he finds himself enslaved by Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum) to fight in an alien arena.

Tom Hiddleston, Tessa Thompson, Idris Elba, Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Hopkins and Karl Urban will also star in the movie.

Thor: Ragnarok will be released on October 27 in the UK and November 3 in the US.
