Jeremy Renner's role in the MCU may have been relatively small, but Marvel has definitely done right by him in terms of skipping the worst of Hawkeye's 50 years of fashion faux pas.

And new photos from the set of Avengers 4 reveal that he will be skipping the giant purple mask look and heading straight to a whole new superhero identity – Ronin.

Peeking out from under his black coat is the leg armour that he wore in the comics when he took on that other identity (named for the lone samurai of Japan's feudal past).

The masked Ronin identity has been adopted by several superheroes. Clint Barton was actually the second to do so (after he came back to life in classic comics fashion), although he later returned to his Hawkeye persona.

The theory is that he might ditch his Hawkeye costume after going on the run at the end of Captain America: Civil War.

It's unclear whether the Ronin identity will also be used in Avengers: Infinity War, which will lead directly into Avengers 4.

Anthony and Joe Russo's untitled movie will reunite Renner with Scarlett Johansson, Elizabeth Olsen, Robert Downey Jr, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Sebastian Stan, Paul Bettany, Samuel L Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Tom Holland and Anthony Mackie, alongside fellow MCU stars Josh Brolin, Chris Pratt, Benedict Cumberbatch, Benedict Wong, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista and Pom Klementieff.

Avengers 4 will be released in the UK on April 26, 2019, and in the US on May 3, 2019.
