That Escape from New York remake looks like it's finally getting off the ground, as the ultimate cult movie director Robert Rodriguez has signed up to helm the project.
Deadline reports that 20th Century Fox (who won the rights to the property back in 2015) have signed Rodriguez up, and are looking to kickstart a franchise - who'd have thought?
Rodriguez has previously directed two Sin City films, the Spy Kids franchise, both Machete films, Predators and the Mariachi trilogy.
The original 1981 Escape from New York was written and directed by the legendary John Carpenter, who also wrote the score. He is said to be heavily involved in the new film as executive producer.
The film starred Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken, an ex-soldier who has to rescue the President from a dystopian future New York that has converted into a Maximum Security Prison.
Plissken is also the inspiration for Solid Snake (and Big Boss) from the Metal Gear Solid series, and we're hoping with Rodriguez's love of being meta, there's a reference back to the games in there.

Now that we've got a director, we just need to find a lead actor to don the eyepatch. Over the years, under a different studio, actors such as Tom Hardy, Jason Statham (!) Charlie Hunnam and Dan Stevens were linked to the role.
