The good news: Sony Pictures is developing a Venom movie. The bad news: Apparently it WON'T be connected to Marvel's Spider-Man.

Sony is building a new movie franchise around Venom that is totally separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

That's right – a Spidey spinoff movie that might not even include Spidey at all.

This potential Venom film series is being headed up by Dante Harper (Edge of Tomorrow).

Tom Holland is the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Spider-Man, set to debut in Captain America: Civil War before getting his own movie in 2017.

Venom had been previously announced as a potential spinoff of Andrew Garfield's Amazing Spider-Man series, before Sony Pictures scrapped the whole slate in 2014.

What to Read Next

In the pages of Marvel Comics, Venom is an alien symbiote who takes control of various crooks after being rejected by Spider-Man.

Disgraced journalist Eddie Brock and high school bully Flash Thompson were among Venom's human hosts as it transitioned from brutal villain to anti-hero.

Previously on the big screen, Topher Grace played the Brock version of Venom in the critically-panned Spider-Man 3 in 2007.
