Nintendo has confirmed plans to release mobile and tablet games.

The company announced that it would partner with Japanese firm DeNA to produce games that can be played on mobiles, tablets, PC, Wii U and 3DS.

Nintendo will develop original games featuring its iconic characters, and has ruled out porting existing games to mobile.

The companies will also work together on a new membership scheme to replace Club Nintendo.

Launching this autumn, the membership scheme will be accessible across smart devices, Nintendo consoles and PC.

To cement the partnership, Nintendo has purchased a 10% stake in DeNA, while DeNA has bought 1.24% of Nintendo stock.

Alongside the news, Nintendo announced it is developing new dedicated games hardware, which will be unveiled next year.

Iwata previously stated that Nintendo will not release games for tablets and smartphones following reports that the company was assessing the mobile market.

However, company president Satoru Iwata would later say that the gaming giant's classic franchises will be recreated as casual titles for the handheld.
