William Shatner tries his best to explain the concept of Red Nose Day to US viewers in a new advert – but he is not entirely successful.

For starters, the Star Trek legend has a bit of trouble figuring out where the clown nose fits or what the lines for his promo actually are.

Shatner is trying to explain that NBC will air a three-hour version of the popular bi-annual UK telethon, which will raise money for 12 charities working with children and young adults in the US and Africa.

Despite his trouble with the concept, Shatner does finally manage to get it right by shouting: "It's for the kids!"

Sam Smith, John Legend, Justin Long, Gina Rodriguez and Jane Lynch are among the stars who are supporting Sir Richard Curtis's first-ever US version of Red Nose Day.

You can catch all the action from New York's Hammerstein Ballroom when NBC teams up with Funny or Die on Thursday, May 21 at 8pm ET.
